Abstract means "of no recognizable shape" and is often reduced to simplest form. A semi-abstract, has some content that is recognizable, but is still in a form out of it's normal environment. That's what this painting is here where it depicts some of the Macaw parrot bird's features and some of its environment in places of the colored areas: colors, shapes, & textures that remind you of the bird... banana leaf strokes, bird of paradise impression, & feather detail.
Abstract paintings let the mind wander to a higher caliper of sophistication by examining parts & relationships of form & color. Interesting how something simplistic does this. The black lines in this piece is synthetic braid hair extensions dipped in really thick black acrylic paint, extending its way over the finished edges of canvas, then cut to perfection. Ruth had used this kind of hair extension to create her longer braids. The idea came to incorporate a part of her hairstyle in this piece for texture.
