Original Painting
Thick Acrylics
1.5 inch Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
This Elephant Ear leaf was textured with a fork as a tool. Dragging through only thick acrylic paint, fascinating texture lines start to form as sgraffito impressions reveal the dark color underneath and light exotic yellow-green on top. Final touches of palette knife disturb the monotony to create an odd interest. Being painted over a non-stick surface creates a paintskin when dry that enables peeling off which helps with positioning easily on to the canvas.
A paintskin also enables lifting of the paint off the surface to form curls and bends that create a sculptural surface. The background and sides are also painted white to add quality, preservation, and sure stands out for a clean look. Whole piece is then also varnished to protect from environmental factors.

Parts of Ruth Collis' style is to paint off the canvas surface and on to a non-stick peelable substrate for the temporary first step. This enables easy arranging on to the canvas.
Some of the leaves are made from squeezing thick paint through cake decorating tips to give their stylish appearance, while also turning it to a permanent art form now to enjoy.
